MHDS ~ 1933 to 2008MHDS was established in 1933. It evolved from a group of local people who were members of a drama class organised by the WEA (Workers' Educational Association). Inspired by their classes, they decided to stage a play. They found a willing leader to be the producer (as directors of theatre plays were then called) and decided to perform 'Candida' by George Bernard Shaw. We are not sure of the exact date of the formation of the group, but we do know that their first play was staged on 2nd & 3rd November 1933. To celebrate the 75th year, we are holding a series of events. The first, to kick off the celebrations, was on Saturday 9th February 2008, a theatre Open Day including an exhibition of memorabilia, fascinating pictures, drawings and press cuttings from our archives, plus behind-the-scenes theatre tours, a display of models and photos of sets of various plays and a chance for visitors to discuss with one of most experienced members, Ian Parry, how a play performance is developed, 'From The Page To The Stage'. It was a very successful day, and many of the happy visitors were members of MHDS who wanted to learn more, as well as 'the general public' of Market Harborough. Events in the pipeline offer a range of events and activites (in addition to our usual plays and visiting productions), some for members only, some open to the public . . . .
And there will be more . . . Watch this space for more details as the year progresses. |
